The Case for Humanity

The kitchen was quiet except for the ticking of the clock. Then, like a spark catching dry wood, the argument ignited.

“You always start with the tech,” she said, her voice sharp but steady. “You stack diagrams and charts as if people fit neatly inside them.”

Her husband frowned. “Because they do, in a model. That's the point. It's one view of an infinite number of combinations. No customer ever does the same thing twice, but a model lets you see the whole pattern.”

She shook her head. “No. You're working backwards. You have to start with the customer experience. With the wife who walks into a store not knowing she needs a new phone case, or the man who stumbles onto a service at midnight. That's where it begins — awareness, decision, loyalty or departure. That's the journey.”

He leaned on the counter, exasperated. “You think I don't know that? Alignment diagrams are how we map it out. They're not about features or specs. They're about human behavior. They show the ecosystem. They make executives stop and listen.”

Her expression softened, though her voice remained firm. “Then don't treat them like paperwork. They're not guesses made in isolation. They're contact — real contact — with people. They're empathy sketched into lines and boxes.”

He paused, his frustration draining into silence. The ticking clock seemed louder now. “You're right,” he finally admitted. “When they're done right, they don't just describe value. They create conversations about it.”

For a long moment they just stood there, each holding the other's gaze. Then she reached for his hand.

“Start with the human,” she whispered. “Work back toward the tech.”

And in the quiet that followed, he nodded.
