or why I've decided to quit Blue Origin
The 21st century great tech-workforce migration
COVID-19 and the subsequent stay-at-home tech revolution showed us that people responding to a company decline are like emigrants from a country that can no longer sustain itself.
The 3 key reasons why people consider quitting are:
Low capacity to raise revenue— your company isn't selling enough and no one wants to invest in it.
Low capacity to hire —people are not choosing your company over your competitors. You might not be able to afford talented workers or your culture and what you stand for isn't attractive.
Haphazard use of power — your boss leads with their title, it's a dictatorship and the reasoning isn't backed by anything employees believe in.
How is this similar to a decision to emigrate?
State's low capacity to raise revenue leads to its currency and subsequently people's wages to lose value.
State's low capacity to attract workforce leads to foreign workers choosing state's neighbors. Worst case scenarios, country's own workforce chooses to leave.
Haphazard use of power — your army protects the ruling class and suppresses expression and protest.
So what does one do if they work at a company resembling a failed state
As an individual who sees themselves within a failing culture, one can, after assessing costs, consider one of the three options:
- Voice your concerns in order to improve the situation.
- Stay loyal to current leaders.
- Exit.
